Originally filmed in the U.S. in 1928-1929, but due to director's removal from production, not released in the U.S. After music and effects track added in 1931, film received limited circulation in France in 1932, although ending differed from that planned by director. Restored 1985 version includes music written by Adolf Tandler for 1931-1932 release--re-recorded--and sound effects based on von Stroheim's notes written for original production. Film's ending is the one planned for in original scenario, but never released. Restorer uses stills, titles, and all available footage from the production, following the original von Stroheim script.
